Rain Sensor

How do rain sensors in some car work?

Automotive Sensors A rain sensor for automatic cleaning of the windshield a Mercedes-Benz Carin 1958, the Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors experimented with a water-sensitive switch that caused several electric motors to close the hood and raise the windows open a specially constructed model Eldorado Biarritz, in case of rain. The device, first appeared have been used by General Motors, for the same purpose, a concept car named "Le Saber" and built seven years before, in 1950-51. Rain sensors are now integrated into a system to automatically start the wipers (wiper intelligent). The most common rain sensor implementation is based on total internal reflection prinicple: infrared light is transmitted to a 45 degree angle to the windshield on the inside near the bottom - if the glass is wet, less light makes it back to the sensor, and wipers turn on.

Enter Volkswagen Passat driven sensor in 2007 Darpa Urban Challenge

The 2007 Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Urban
Challenge, one of the racing world's most exclusive cars, will take place on November 3. Several teams will allow their "smart" vehicles for enter a course that covers 60 miles of unknown territory and designed to revitalize urban driving conditions.

Objective of each team is the best time, while, of course, observing traffic regulations. The race requires participating vehicles to merge into traffic, negotiating roundabouts and cross intersections busy. All cars are directed and driven by computers.

In the race, as Volkswagen Passat enter its backing of escape quality performance of VW and built by the research department of Volkswagen and its headquarters in California, Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) with the assistance of Stanford University.

Named in honor of the University of Stanford, founder of Leland Stanford Jr.., The Passat "Junior" is equipped with electromechanical power steering, an electric accelerator pedal, a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) and an electric parking brake. And to make the vehicle 100 percent computer-controlled Volkswagen of America's Electronic Research Laboratory (ERL) modified these electric systems and brakes. Other equipment designed and built by the ERL includes the Custom-made supports for the sophisticated set of sensors. Processors Intel Core 2 Duo, with two of multiple processing units per chip are some of the compositions of the brain of the vehicle "." All these with the software developed Stanford University Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory, the vehicle must be truly independent.

Dr. Burkhard Huhnke, head of Volkswagen, Laboratory Electronics Research, said Volkswagen is pleased to join the DARPA Urban Challenge 2007 after his victory in the past, the DARPA Grand Challenge. He said they see an opportunity to further advance intelligent technologies for future use in passenger vehicles next generation. He explained that the features developed for the Urban Challenge will ultimately lead to the driving safety and more fun today increasingly congested traffic. Continued saying they have the perfect car for this challenge, like its Touareg Stanley "in its 2005 Grand Challenge victory.

Stanley,''as the name, VW Touareg TDI won the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2005. Stanley beat 22 other unmanned vehicles, with their onboard sensors and navigation functions. 2005 was a demanding 132 miles race championship having rough desert roads, mountain passes, dry lakes and tunnels. And without a single failure, Stanley completed the race with a winning time of six hours and 54 minutes.

The Electronics Research Laboratory

Founded in 1998, Volkswagen of U.S. electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) is focusing its efforts on providing customers with smarter cars for the future. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, her job is in identifying new technologies and accelerate their development for future vehicle production.

DARPA
